Overview

The Department of Orthodontics was started way back in 2003 and is currently being headed by Dr. Mridula Trehan. The Department has grown monumentally and is continuously progressing in terms of student education and patient care and infrastructure.

The department is housed with an array of treatment techniques that attend to orthodontic patients of all ages. The armamentarium of patient care includes removable orthodontic appliances, fixed orthodontic appliances (braces), clear esthetic appliances (Biostar), lingual orthodontic appliances and orthodontic micro implants.
.
At present 150 patients are being treated with the help of fixed orthodontic treatment in the department.
Treatment is also being rendered to patients with cleft lip and palate and those requiring orthognathic surgeries. Multidisciplinary treatment care options involving adjunctive orthodontic treatment, prosthodontic rehabilitation, periodontal therapy and restorative and aesthetic dentistry are also taken care of in the department.

Research work is conducted by the Department on a regular basis.
The department has recently conducted an epidemiological survey on 700 subjects to determine the prevalence of malocclusion in Jaipur city, which has been published in an International Journal. Esthetics is very subjective in nature. Hence a study was carried out to evaluate the differences in views of the professional orthodontists and general population regarding the perception of facial profile. This study has recently been published in the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry.
Another study was done by our department to evaluate the applicability of Bolton’s ratio in the general population of Jaipur. This research work has again been published in an International Journal.
Research work is also going on in the field of molecular biology evaluating the role of Insulin like Growth Factor-1 in the prediction of skeletal maturity which can obviate the need for subjecting the patient to repeated radiation exposure.

A one day lecture and workshop on “Clinical Photography” was organized and conducted by the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Mahatma Gandhi Dental College and Hospital on the 1st of December 2011.
Dr. Jayesh Rahalkar, Professor , D.Y.Patil Dental College, Pune, an eminent speaker was invited to speak on  the various technical and clinical aspects related to photography. The workshop was a success with an attendance of over 180 participants from various dental colleges in and around Rajasthan.

The department is well equipped with a sufficient number of dental chairs fitted with all the latest accessories.
Nemoceph, a novel cephalometric software  is routinely used for all the patients which not only helps in proper diagnosis and treatment planning but also in the motivation of the patient by creating virtual post treatment images
The department also has  laboratories both for undergraduates as well as postgraduates. These laboratories house state of the art equipments such as Biostar Machine, plaster dispensers, Ministar, hydrosolder unit, electropolishing unit, model trimmers etc.
The seminar room in the department has overhead projectors, LCD projectors and blackboards for conducting various academic activities.
The library is well stocked with recent books and journals for reference. The record room houses the various records of the previously treated cases by faculty and postgraduate students which can be assessed by students for conducting studies.
