The Department of Orthodontics was started way back in 2003 and has grown monumentally and is continuously progressing in terms of student education and patient care and infrastructure. The department is housed with an array of treatment techniques that attend to orthodontic patients of all ages.

The armamentarium of patient care includes removable orthodontic appliances, fixed orthodontic appliances (braces), clear esthetic appliances (Biostar), lingual orthodontic appliances and orthodontic micro implants. Treatment is being rendered to patients with cleft lip and palate and those requiring orthognathic surgeries. Multidisciplinary treatment care options involving adjunctive orthodontic treatment, prosthodontic rehabilitation, periodontal therapy and restorative and aesthetic dentistry are also taken care of in the department. The department is well equipped with a sufficient number of dental chairs fitted with all the latest accessories. Nemoceph, a novel cephalometric software is routinely used for all the patients which not only helps in proper diagnosis and treatment planning but also in the motivation of the patient by creating virtual post treatment images. The department also has laboratories both for undergraduates as well as postgraduates. These laboratories house state of the art equipment such as Biostar Machine, Plaster dispensers, Hydrosolder unit, Electropolishing unit, Model trimmers etc. The seminar room in the department has overhead projectors, LCD projectors and blackboards for conducting various academic activities. The library is well stocked with recent books and journals for reference. The record room houses the various records of the previously treated cases by faculty and postgraduate students which can be assessed by students for conducting studies. Research work is also conducted by the Department on a regular basis.

Teaching Module

Undergraduate Training

The undergraduate teaching in Orthodontics begins in 2nd Year with wire bending exercises which is continued in the 3rd and 4th year. During this time, the students learn orthodontic case history and diagnosis, cephalometrics and removable appliance fabrication. The department also has a library, museum and chart display to further the knowledge of students. All the lectures are delivered on power point presentations with animations and videos.

Postgraduate Training

The department admits 5 students each year. The goals of postgraduate training in orthodontics are to train B.D.S. graduates who will;

  • Practice Orthodontics efficiently and effectively, backed by scientific knowledge and skill. To enable them to participate in multi-disciplinary treatment involving orthodontic treatment.
  • Exercise empathy and a caring attitude towards patients and to maintain high ethical standards.
  • Continue to evince keen interest in continuing professional education in Orthodontics and allied specialties irrespective of whether in teaching/practice.
  • Willing to share the knowledge and skills with any learning junior or a colleague.
  • To develop a critical faculty.
  • To initiate into research

The training programme in orthodontics is to structure and achieve the following four objectives-

Syllabus

The program is structured to equip the trainee with skill and knowledge to be able to practice basic orthodontics and have the ability to intelligently pursue further apprenticeship towards advanced orthodontics. The curriculum is divided into-

  • 6 months teaching of basic sciences and completion of pre-clinical exercises.
  • 2 ½ Years of coverage of all the relevant topics in Orthodontics, clinical training involving
treatment of patients and submission of dissertation.

University examination consists of 4 written papers and 2 day practical examination and is held at the end of 3 years.
