The department offers a 3-year post-doctoral residency program in Medical Oncology (recognised by the NMC) leading to the award of DM (Medical Oncology). It encompasses super-speciality training in the comprehensive workup and management of Solid Organ Malignancies as well as Haematological cancers and Stem Cell transplantation (autologous, allogenic & haplo-identical).

During the DM program, the trainee shall get a thorough clinical exposure of the entire spectrum of Solid and Haematological cancers at a high-volume, multi-speciality, Comprehensive Cancer Centre under the guidance of highly regarded, experienced, and committed faculty and exposure to related departments like clinical haematology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, onco-pathology, molecular oncology, nuclear medicine, palliative medicine, onco-psychology, and interventional radiology.

Course Overview

The trainee shall get a hands-on exposure to various skill sets and procedures such as

  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • Administration of Chemotherapy
  • Lumbar puncture and Intrathecal chemotherapy
  • PICC line insertion Apheresis
  • All aspects of Stem Cell transplantation
  • Approach to the new patient of cancer and his/her comprehensive, multi-disciplinary management
  • All aspects of preventive oncology
  • All aspects of palliative care and end-of-life care
  • Management of oncology emergencies and chemotherapy complications
  • Investigator-initiated and industry sponsored clinical trials

Career Path

After completion of the 3-year training, the graduate is expected to be proficient in the practice of Medical Oncology. The various career avenues open for the graduate are - practice in a teaching, corporate or a private hospital; pursuit of further specialisation and fellowships in either of the sub-branches of Medical Oncology or pursuit of a research-based career (clinical or basic sciences). With the rapidly increasing incidence of cancer and the commissioning of new cancer centres and new oncology departments, there will be ample opportunities for the trainee, both, in the government and the private sector for satisfying and rewarding careers.
