Overview
Dept. of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics
Conservative Dentistry is the branch of Dentistry which is concerned with the conservation of teeth in the mouth. It embraces the practice of operative Dentistry and Endodontics, and includes various kinds of direct and indirect restorations of individual teeth in the mouth. The department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at Mahatma Gandhi Dental College caters to graduate students at the school and offers a postgraduate programme leading to a master of dental surgery.
Primary goal of Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of sequelae of dental caries and includes the techniques and procedures to restore the teeth to full function & appearance in an aesthetically pleasing manner with as little loss of healthy tooth structure as possible. It also involves performing root canal treatment and associated surgical procedures to rid the tooth of its offending malady The treatment provided include various fillings (Silver & Tooth Coloured), Pin retained restorations,Inlays,Onlays, Laminates,Veeners, Root canal treatment, surgical endodontics (Hemisection, Radisection, Apicectomy), Restoration of Endodontically Treated Teeth, bleaching, & management of traumatized teeth.
The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is situated in right and left wing of the college on the first floor. The department has Four sections; one Preclinical Lab, one Clinical Lab & two clinical Sections :one for undergraduate students where in the basic treatment procedures are done and one for postgraduate students where in all advanced treatments are given, The Department has well equipped isolated operatory for surgical endodontic procedures as well
The Department has state of the art equipment which include Digital radiography & Intraoral imaging, apex locators, thermo-plastisized G.P system, Endomotor, Bleaching light. A fully installed Casting unit and restorative Dental Laboratory capable of doing specialised laboratory work The most important aspect is that the Department has enthusiastic, highly qualified, dedicated staff. The expertise and clinical experience of staff is par excellence. The main concern of the department is satisfaction of the patients. The department is always on a progressing front as far as quality of the treatment rendered to the patients is concerned
Teaching Module
UG ProgrammePre-Clinical – The department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics gives training to Second year BDS students in the pre-clinical laboratory which is equipped with 40 “phantom” heads. The Students are exposed to various aspects of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics theoretically and the skills of the students are honed on these simulated patients before they take on the real patients in the Third year.
Clinical – The clinical programs spread over 2 years i.e. Third and Final year BDS wherein intensive clinical coaching is given consisting of variety of fillings and root canal treatment. Students are also given consultant demonstration of newer gadgets and techniques. Also they get to see and use assortments of restorative materials. Apart from the clinical training, the students thirst for acquiring knowledge is fulfilled by the department library, internet, museum, charts etc. All the lectures are delivered with excellent audio-video support. Seminars and tutorials are conducted for Final year BDS students to improve their vocational qualities.
PG ProgrammeThe Department admits 5 PG students each year. The “Masters” Programme extends to 3 years. During the 1st year students have to work on phantom heads to recoup their skills. Stressing on the quality work, all the exercises beginning with simple amalgam fillings to complicated post-core preparations are taught on the phantom heads. More stress is given on allied basic medical and dental sciences. The PG students are also expected to write a Library Thesis which enables them to prepare themselves for Final Thesis. Equipped with their laptops the students are encouraged to present their seminars on the LCD Projector. During this period the students are also trained to deliver lectures to the undergrads.
During 2nd and 3rd year the clinical training intensifies, the students have to deal with a variety of simple to complicated cases. They have to try every technique in the book and record their achievements in a log-book. They have to complete their Final thesis work by the end of 2nd year and start preparing for the Final Examination. The final examination consists of 4 written papers and 2 day clinical examination culminating in “Grand Viva-Voce”.
