Overview

Prosthodontics is a specialised field within dentistry that focuses on restoring the function and aesthetic appearance of a patient's mouth.

It is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of patients who have missing or deficient teeth, as well as issues with their oral and maxillofacial tissues. This field uses biocompatible artificial substitutes to improve the oral health and overall well-being of patients.

One of the main goals of prosthodontics is to help patients regain their oral function and ability to eat, speak, and smile healthily. This is achieved through the use of various dental prostheses such as dental implants, bridgework, dentures, and crowns.

These prostheses are custom-made to fit each patient's unique mouth and are designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Dental implants are a common treatment option in prosthodontics for patients who are missing one or more teeth. They are artificial roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone and act as a foundation for replacement teeth. Implants are a durable and long-lasting solution that can help improve a patient's ability to chew and speak properly.

  • Bridgework is another prosthetic option used in prosthodontics to replace the missing teeth. A dental bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth that are attached to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. This helps to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, restore proper bite alignment, and prevent shifting of surrounding teeth.
Overview
  • Dentures are removable appliances that are used to replace multiple missing teeth. They can be full or partial, depending on the number of teeth that need to be replaced. Dentures are customised to fit comfortably in the patient's mouth and can greatly improve their ability to eat and speak.
  • Crowns are used in prosthodontics to restore damaged or decayed teeth. They are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns not only protect the tooth from further damage but also help improve the overall aesthetics of a patient's smile.

Overall, prosthodontics plays a crucial role in helping patients achieve optimal oral health and function. By using advanced prosthetic solutions, prosthodontists can improve the quality of life for patients with missing or deficient teeth.
