Behind the steel gates of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College lie the grounds for unbounded academic and personal growth. Entering this prestigious college in Jaipur was not just the beginning of my journey into the medical field; rather, it was my own version of a second coming that reignited my passion for this vast but marvelous science.
The campus, surrounded by developing infrastructure, fosters a rich experience for both residential and day scholars alike. The campus is diffuse, with lush greens in between, yet closely knitted to other healthcare science institutes to encourage interdisciplinary discussions and explorations.
Medicine is a field quite similar to old Vedic schools; in both cases, knowledge is passed onwards by gurus to the upcoming generations. With renowned HODs and professors leading the departments and enthusiastic tutors supporting them, the college maintains an appreciable student-to-faculty ratio, rarely seen in other colleges in the region. Deep within the boundless pools of knowledge carried by the professors, which they are ever-ready to share, you will find that they are colleagues too—colleagues excited to share and discuss their latest research and findings. A constant push towards research at the UG level is a rare trait in Indian medical colleges, which I was ever so happy to find here.
Anticipating an average college life, I was pleasantly surprised to delve into second and even final-year subjects within the first year. To better facilitate the horizontal and vertical integration proposed by the NMC in the recent CBME curriculum, the college conducts Undergraduate Combined Rounds or UGCR. These sessions look upon any particular ailment such as Anemia, Jaundice, TB, etc., through the lenses of various subjects in MBBS. UGCR takes its inspiration from similar programs being conducted in many internationally renowned US and UK medical schools.
Jaipur Swasthya Charcha and similar seminars have helped me and other students by providing us with a broader outlook towards the work of doctors and its impacts on society. Along with 'What?' and 'How?', we are also being exposed to the 'Why?' behind the actions of medical professionals.
I believe these factors will, over time, culminate in a holistic college experience, providing not only profound understanding but also invaluable skillsets for me.
