Overview

Established in 2000, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (MGMC&H) was initially affiliated with Rajasthan University of Health Sciences under the dynamic leadership of the Founder and Chairman, Prof. Dr. ML Swarankar, India’s leading IVF & Fertility Specialist.

Later, in May 2011, an Act of the State Legislative Assembly promulgated MGMC&H's affiliation as Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences & Technology (MGUMST), which subsequently evolved as the first private medical university in the state of Rajasthan.

MGUMST was the first private college in Rajasthan to be permitted by erstwhile Medical Council of India for an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats in 2001 which was further increased to 150 MBBS seats in 2008 and in year 2021. Currently, MGUMST is proud to have an annual intake capacity of 250 MBBS students as increased by the Honourable National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2021.

The Medical College further expanded its academics to postgraduate courses in MD/MS programmes as permitted by the erstwhile Medical Council of India in 2009. MGUMST currently has 201 MD/MS seats in 30 different disciplines for the academic session 2024-25.

In line with the evolving landscape of medical education, MGUMST introduced the DM/MCh programme in 2016. Setting itself apart from other medical colleges, both government and private, MGUMST now leads in Rajasthan with the highest number of seats, offering 64 DM/MCh positions across 23 disciplines for the academic session.

The college offers 64 seats across different disciplines currently. The college also established the MGH IVF Centre in 2017-18 offering an annual intake of two seats. The IVF Centre offers NMC approved super speciality MCh programme in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery that stands out in the entire country.

MGUMST also extends to Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, an NMC recognised centre for Medical Education and Technology inaugurated by Dr Aruna V. Vanikar, President, UG Medical Education Board and Dr Vijayendra Kumar, Whole-time Member, UG Medical Education Board. The faculty members of the college consists of experts in Basic Course of Medical Education (BCME) and Advanced Course of Medical Education (ACME).

Additionally, the college has been conducting revised Basic Course Workshop and BCME for in-house faculty members as well as for the faculty members of other medical colleges in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as nominated by the National Medical Commission.

Beyond medical education, MGUMST also extends as Mahatma Gandhi Hospital providing advanced healthcare facilities with a 1,450 bedded tertiary care centre. The hospital is a pioneer in the field of Organ Transplantation, Telemedicine and extension-outreach clinical services. Moreover, it is the first teaching hospital in Rajasthan to perform the first ever heart transplant, deceased donor kidney and liver transplant and also the first heart, lung and pancreas transplant.

The doctors perform two kidney transplants every day and over four living donor liver transplants every month. Furthermore, the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, managed by Oncology and Hematology Services has conducted over 20 allogeneic, autologous and haploidentical bone marrow transplants. The hospital also provides intensive teaching and training to undergraduate, postgraduate, and superspeciality students by expert faculty members of National and International fields.

The Mahatma Gandhi Hospital is also the nodal centre of the Government of Rajasthan for telemedicine consultations and is the biggest centre in North India. In the current world, telemedicine is one of the most vital pillars of healthcare and MGUMST takes pride in being one of the most premium universities to be associated with both government and non-government agencies in the field of telemedicine.
