Department of Onco Pathology

It is a matter of pride to have DM Onco-Pathology course at our institute, as just a handful of the country's best medical colleges offer this Super Specialty course.

Cancer is the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is the task of oncopathologist to provide an accurate, specific and sufficiently comprehensive diagnosis to enable the clinician to develop an optimal plan for treatment and to some extent estimate prognosis. The tremendous advancement in all fields of oncology requires a great deal of additional information, to allow the most appropriate classification for therapeutic intervention, prognosis and for research. In the era of precision oncology and personalized medicine the role of oncopathologist has become very vital.

DM in Onco-Pathology is a thoroughly guided and highly supervised course. The super specialty course in Onco-Pathology is intended to produce a well informed and trained specialist who can diagnose and categorize malignancy. Hematology section offers advanced hematology testing including flowcytometry. Aspiration cytology and large number of exfoliative cytology is reported. Comprehensive synoptic reporting of surgical pathology specimens and intraoperative frozen section consultation of oncology cases are done by experienced oncopathologist. Immunohistochemistry by automated system (panels of more than 100 markers) is routinely done in the department. Molecular testing facilities like FISH, PCR and NGS are available in our institution.

Our DM program offers intense training and exposure to cutting edge technologies. We ensure our trainees develop necessary skills to become proficient oncopathologist and contribute to the society. Special emphasis is given to research work. We have highly dedicated and experienced faculty members and wealth of clinical material. As Head of department of Onco-Pathology I am proud to lead such a dynamic and efficient team. Seminars, journal club meeting, slide discussions, multidisciplinary faculty lectures and tumor board meetings are regularly conducted. Students are made conversant with principle, steps and interpretation of molecular diagnostic techniques for eg FISH, PCR and NGS etc .

Department participates in External Quality Assurance (EQAS) program for hematology, in collaboration with AIIMS, Cytology and histopathology and immunohistochemistry with TMH, Mumbai.
