Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine

Palliative medicine is an emerging medical specialty in India, and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Jaipur proudly stands as a pioneer in the field. It is the first nationally recognized centre in the private sector in Rajasthan, acknowledged by the National Medical Commission.

The department's mission is to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with life-limiting conditions, such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s), as well as those with end-stage organ impairments. Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for both patients and their families, the department focuses on pain and symptom management, psychological support, and spiritual care.

Established in 2019, the department of Palliative Medicine at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College initiated a postgraduate program, Masters in Palliative Medicine, in 2021. Presently, the department offers three seats per year in the postgraduate program, guided by a team of well-trained faculty.

Since its inception, the department has experienced significant growth in all aspects of patient care, actively engaging in training, education, and research. Postgraduate trainees in Palliative Medicine gain exposure to diverse patient cases from oncology and non-oncology specialties.

The department fosters an excellent academic environment, providing students with a friendly atmosphere and a state-of-the-art academic program. This includes lectures, seminars, journal clubs, and tutorials conducted by both national and international faculty.

Palliative care is an expanding field, offering various career paths for postgraduate students. Upon completion of the course, they can pursue roles in patient care, research, and education, thereby making a tangible difference in the lives of patients and their families.
